Athena, Patroness of Athens

Athena: upholder of civilization, wisdom and crafts,

the Goddess whose sense of reason never fails or wafts,

the Patroness of Athens, where long ago she planted her olive tree,

the symbol of sacred benevolence for all her citizens to see.

Athena’s Golden Sandals

Golden sandals that enable Athena to fly

over continent, island and sea -

hushed wonder with joyful sigh

at every mountain, valley and tree.

Athena and Diomedes

Once during pitched battle between Greeks and Trojans,

Athena disguised herself as a warrior

and stood beside the hero Diomedes,

another of her favourites.

On that day she made him a god

with superhuman strength,

the ability to overpower any mortal or immortal -

whoever came face to face with him

on the battlefield.

Diomedes was unstoppable,

and many Trojans lost their lives,

beaten down by his implaccable spear and sword.

Always worship Athena,

and know that heroes are made great

when she bestows her favour and protection.

Athena and Ares

Two Deities of War:

Athena embodying rationalized, controlled, strategic warfare;

Ares personifying carnage, bloodthirstiness, senselessness and betrayal.

These immortal siblings always clash,

yet it is Athena who always prevails.

Once during the war between the Greeks and Trojans,

Athena wounded Ares by transfixing a spear in his belly.

Ares thumped down and bellowed in agony;

and the Greek and Trojan armies shuddered with terror.

Weak and wounded, Ares returned to Mount Olympus,

where he complained to Zeus of his sister’s treachery.

Zeus replied: “Of all my children, you are most hateful to me,

for strife and destruction are always dear to your heart.

Yet you are still my child, and I will not let you suffer.

I order the physician Paieon to tend to your wounds and heal you.”

The Friendship of Odysseus and Athena

Under a shady tree Odysseus and Athena sat,

joking with each other and having a quiet chat,

a friendship characterized by mutual affinity

and recorded by the poet Homer for all eternity.

Odysseus’ Prayer to Athena

Upon the rolling waves, the ship heaved back and forth,

squeaking slightly and scented lightly of sea-salt-air.

Odysseus went onto the deck, and stared across the liquid expanse;

and began praying to Athena:

“As you always protected me on the battlefields of Troy,

so aid me now as I journey homeward.

Towards my ship send only gentle winds,

so I may return to my wife and son

after absence of twenty years.”
