Persephone (XVI)

During Persephone’s absence,

Demeter would lament

and make the earth barren -

the season of winter.

Yet when Persephone would return

to the realms above,

Demeter would rejoince

and make the earth would bear fruit again -

the season of summer.

Persephone (XV)

Demeter suspected some treachery

from Hades,

and straightaway asked her daughter

about having eaten anything

in the underworld.

When it was affirmed

that Persephone did taste of the pomegranate,

it was decreed, by divine law,

that she would spend one third of every year

in the underworld,

with her husband Hades;

for the rest of the year,

she would return to Mount Olympus,

in the company of her mother

and immortals gods.
