Niobe (II)

“Death is the only god who doesn’t like gifts:

one gains nothing when sacrificing and pouring libations to him.

He has no altar, nor is he praised in songs.

He is the only divinity from whom Persuasion stands aloof.”

A fragment from Aeschylus’ lost play Niobe

Heliades (II)

“Where,

during my father’s setting,

is the cup wrought by Hephaestus,

the cup in which he crosses

the wide swelling seas,

asleep,

fleeing the darkness

of holy night, with her black horses.”

A fragment from Aeschylus’ lost play Heliades, where the chorus, daughters of the Sun, describe their father’s golden cup, which enabled him to travel from the west to the east during the night.

Heliades (I)

“Zeus is the sky; Zeus is the earth; Zeus is the heavens.

Zeus is everything, and whatever is beyond that.”

A fragment from Aeschylus’ lost play Heliades (Daughters of the Sun), which probably dramatized the myth of Phaethon, who was killed while driving the chariot of his father Helios, the Sun god. Phaethon’s sisters were transformed into weeping trees while mourning their brother’s death.
